Eternals gross $77m as AMC is all set to report its Q3 results on Monday

Providing yet another boost to the movie industry, Marvel’s Eternals had a strong opening weekend. It is estimated to have grossed between $75 million to $80 million domestically and raked $161 million globally. This is the second-biggest worldwide collection for a movie in 2021, falling behind F9 The First Saga’s $163 million. With the arrival of Eternals, the previous box-office champ, Dune, was knocked down to a second place.

With movies breaking box office records week-in and week-out, all eyes are set on AMC’s earnings call that is due today at 5pm E.T.

With theatrical performances breaking records, one would assume that there would be a slowdown in performances for streaming services. And that’s what is happening exactly. Walt Disney announced on Monday that it was offering one month of Disney+ for $1.99 for a limited period of time, as the entertainment giant seeks to stem a slowdown in paid user growth at its streaming service.

Disney, which is due to report its fourth-quarter results on Wednesday, charges $7.99 per month for its Disney plus streaming service in the U.S. It recently hinted at a slowdown in subscriber growth on its streaming platform Disney+, leading to a rare Wall Street downgrade.

AMC, on the other hand, had a record-breaking October. AMC announced a press release on Sunday stating that “the domestic industry box office for October 2021 is estimated to come in considerably higher than that of any previous month since February of 2020.” This indicated that the movie or theatre business would return to normal soon after the devastating Covid-19 pandemic.

Analysts estimate the loss per share for the fourth quarter to be $0.19 against a loss of $5.70 last year. It indicates a growth of 93.97% year-over-year. The estimated revenue is $1.12 billion against a revenue of 162.5 million. This suggests a huge growth of 589.54% from the previous year.

To add to their revenue, AMC’s CEO Adam Aron tweeted, it will be entering the multi-billion-dollar popcorn industry in 2022. AMC branded popcorns will be available everywhere; freshly popped at malls, home delivery/to go from theatres, and microwavable sold at supermarkets.
